Face the camera head-on

  • Keep your head straight and look directly at the camera.
  • Make sure your face is centered in the frame.
Use Good Lighting

3.Use Good Lighting

Natural light works best

  • Stand near a window or use bright, even lighting.

Your photo, in the official format

A phone photo is enough: the tool cuts out the subject, sets a plain background and frames the face to the required dimensions. The example below shows the real output, with no manual retouching.

The right passport size photo for every document, in every country

Every authority has its own rules: millimetre-exact dimensions, a required background, a set face size. Our tool automatically applies the format of the document you pick — here are the main ones.

Document Country Dimensions Background Good to know
Passport (digital photo code) United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Digital Light Photo code accepted for the online application
Passport & visa United States 🇺🇸 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 in) White Square photo, head 25-35 mm
Passport & national ID card France 🇫🇷 35 × 45 mm Light and plain Head 70-80% of the height; standard European format
Fototessera (ID card, passport, licence) Italy 🇮🇹 35 × 45 mm White Centred face, neutral expression
Biometric Passfoto (ID card, passport, licence) Germany 🇩🇪 35 × 45 mm Light Strict biometric requirements (eyes open, mouth closed)
Pasfoto (passport, ID card, driving licence) Netherlands 🇳🇱 35 × 45 mm Light and plain Official Dutch acceptance matrix
DNI & passport Spain 🇪🇸 32 × 26 mm Plain white Specific format, smaller than the European 35 × 45
International visa 190+ countries Per country Per country Pick the country: the specs apply automatically

You receive both the digital file at the exact dimensions for online applications and the printable sheet (several photos on a 10 × 15 cm page) to print at any photo kiosk or shop.

Driving licence, visa, renewals: a digital photo ready for online applications

More and more applications are handled entirely online — passport renewals, driving licence requests, visa forms — and they ask for a digital photo file instead of a classic paper print.

Our service generates a photo in the digital format these online applications accept: regulation dimensions and quality, compliant background, a file ready to attach to your application (including the UK's online passport service, which works with a digital photo). You skip the trip to a photo booth whenever your procedure accepts a file upload.

The baby passport photo, without the tears

Photographing an infant in a photo booth borders on the impossible: eyes open, mouth closed, no dummy, no parent's hand visible — and a cooperative baby. Our pocket studio changes the game: lay your child on a plain, well-lit sheet, take the photo from above with your phone, and retry as many times as you need. Our tool crops to the required format, evens out the background and checks the criteria specific to children (only the face counts, and a neutral expression isn't demanded of infants the way it is of adults). You approve the best shot; we deliver the file and the printable sheet.

Passport photo online — frequently asked questions

Formats, applications, price, guarantee: everything to know before sending your selfie.

Can I make a free ID photo online?

Free tools exist, and honesty demands saying what they do: a crop to the right dimensions, sometimes a whitened background. What they don't do: check real compliance (face size, shadows, expression, regulation background) or guarantee acceptance by the authority — and a rejected photo means a delayed application. Our pocket studio automatically checks every criterion and stands behind the result. Full access costs €0.50 for 48 hours, then €39.90/month unless you cancel; cancelling takes a moment from your account.

What size is a passport photo?

In most European countries the regulation passport size photo is 35 × 45 mm: it covers the French passport and ID card, the Italian fototessera and the German Passfoto. The face must fill a precise share of the height, on a light, plain background, with a neutral expression. Other countries differ: 32 × 26 mm for the Spanish DNI, 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 in) for US documents, a digital photo code for the UK. Pick your document in the tool: dimensions, background and proportions apply automatically.

Will my photo really be accepted by the authority?

Every photo goes through a point-by-point automatic compliance check: dimensions, face size and position, background, brightness, sharpness, expression. You only receive the photo once it ticks every criterion of the chosen document. And because the final decision always belongs to the authority handling your file, we carry the risk for you: a rejected photo is redone free of charge, or refunded. Across the thousands of photos delivered every month, rejections remain exceptional — and covered.

Does your photo work for online applications (passport renewal, driving licence)?

Yes: we generate a digital photo at the format accepted by online services that allow a file upload — including the UK's online passport application, which works with a digital photo. One important clarification: we are a private photo-preparation service, independent from any administration — we prepare the compliant file, and the online service accepts it while processing your application. Some national procedures (such as the French e-photo code) only work with a photo taken by an approved provider: check your application's requirement before ordering.

Can I take a baby or child passport photo?

Yes — and it's one of the cases where the online service changes everything. Lay your baby on a plain sheet, shoot from above, retry freely until the right take — eyes open, mouth closed, no dummy or visible hand. Our tool crops to the document's format, evens the background and applies the relaxed criteria set for infants. You choose the best photo; we deliver the digital file and the printable sheet.

How do I take the photo with my phone?

Three moves are enough. Distance: phone at 40-50 cm with the front camera, or 1-2 m with the rear camera held by someone else. Framing: head straight, eyes to the lens, face centred, shoulders visible. Light: face a window, in even daylight, with no shadow cast on your face or the background. The backdrop of your room doesn't matter: our AI replaces it with the regulation background of the chosen document.

Which documents are covered?

Passport, national ID card, driving licence, residence permit, visa, professional badges and cards — for more than 190 countries (UK digital photo code, US 2 × 2 in documents, Italian fototessera, German biometric Passfoto, Dutch pasfoto, Spanish DNI…). Each document applies its own specs automatically. If you can't find yours, support answers quickly — it's often a variant of a format we already cover.

How do I print my photos?

You receive two deliverables: the digital file at the exact dimensions (for online applications) and a ready-to-print sheet grouping several photos on a standard 10 × 15 cm photo format. Have that sheet printed at a photo kiosk, a supermarket or a photographer for pennies, then cut along the guides. The sheet is millimetre-accurate — no printer settings to fiddle with.

How fast is my photo ready?

Count three minutes between sending your selfie and delivery: analysis, background cut-out, formatting and the compliance check are automatic. No appointment, no travel, no waiting for the post. If the check finds a blocking issue (a harsh shadow, a face too small), you're asked to retake the photo immediately, with a precise note of what's wrong.

What happens to my photos after processing?

Your files are encrypted during processing, never shared, and automatically deleted from our servers after 30 days. You can also request immediate deletion from your account. No photo is ever used to train models or for commercial purposes. Privacy is part of the product: an ID photo is sensitive data, and we treat it as such.

How much does the service cost?

Full access starts with a 48-hour trial at €0.50: unlimited photos, every format, printable sheet, retouching included. Unless you cancel, the subscription continues at €39.90/month — it also covers the photo editor and the site's AI tools. Cancel in two clicks from your account, anytime, including during the 48 hours. The price shown is the price paid: no hidden option, no surcharge at delivery.

What if my photo is rejected at the counter?

Let us know via your account or support, quoting the reason given by the authority. We redo the photo correcting the failed criterion, free of charge and as a priority; if a redo isn't possible or the rejection persists, we refund you. Keep the exact rejection reason: it lets us adjust precisely (background, contrast, proportions) rather than guess.

Do you cover neighbouring countries' formats (fototessera, Passfoto, pasfoto)?

Yes — same engine, different rules. The Italian fototessera (35 × 45 mm, white background) for ID card, passport and licence; the German biometric Passfoto with its strict criteria; the Dutch pasfoto matching the acceptance matrix; the Spanish DNI at 32 × 26 mm. Select the country and the document: dimensions, background and face proportions adjust automatically, and the compliance check applies the local rules.
